This book is confronting - but a must read! It fostered a stimulating discussion in our Book Club, of the brutal aftermath of war and of what people can endure and how they heal.
A seeming murder/mystery, it evolves as a critique and evokes a questioning of Australia as a haven for migrants.
The characters that inhabit this book represent aspects of Australian society today – from the immigrants escaping the tragedy and burden of war and violence to the middle class aspirational professionals with scant moral code.
Each character becomes real and meaningful to the reader and Patrić has that rare talent of portraying his female characters with depth and compassion.
It’s beautifully written and we recommend all Australians to read it for its thought-provoking portrayal of Australia today.
