Tom is an award winning English novelist. His fourth novel The Farm has been hailed as taking his writing to an even higher level. Daniel lives in London with his partner Mark. He hasn’t told his parents, Swedish born Tilda and English born Chris that he is gay. His parents have moved to Sweden, retiring to a new life in a rural setting. Daniel receives a very odd phone call from his father who is extremely worried about his wife. Chris tells Daniel that Tilda has been acting very strangely, in fact has become irrational and violent, she needed to be placed in an institution for her own safety. She has left it and disappeared. Daniel immediately books a ticket to Sweden but at the airport he receives a phone call from his mother to say she is arriving in London within hours. He cancels the flight and awaits her arrival. The Farm then intricately weaves between Tilda telling her story, with Daniel’s reeling at what he is hearing, and his father’s conflicting account. As the reader, you are totally absorbed in the story and your opinion and your empathy change as the plot unfolds. The ending is completely unexpected, yet makes perfect sense. I finished The Farm by saying aloud “wow”!
