Renowned Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt was born in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna. Excited by the artists in other countries who were beginning to rebel against orthodoxy Klimt began to develop new ideas, and in 1897 he co-founded the Vienna Secession. The artists of the Vienna Secession did not form a single "school"; they were individuals, many of whom worked in very different fields, and they certainly approached their work in very different ways. But they shared similar goals and priorities in seeking to break free of the constraints of the late nineteenth century academic art establishment. In this powerful work, Klimt sought to portray the lifecycle of women in a realistic light. Awarded the gold medal at the Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte in Rome in 1911, this painting illustrates the passing of time. In the full artwork, an elderly naked woman weeps and a young mother embraces her sleeping baby daughter.
