Young British writer David Whitehouse won the prestigious Betty Trask Prize in 2012 for Bed. The New York Times has earmarked David as a writer to watch. His second novel Mobile Library has been called a tragiccomic adventure and concerns a troubled 12 year old boy who escapes his family life in a stolen library-on-wheels. Bobby Nasku is bullied at home and at school, but luckily has a school friend Sunny who divises a way to beat the bullies with disastrous consequences. Bobby develops a friendship with Rosa, a friendly girl with an intellectual disability, who also has a problem with bullies. Bobby finds the peace and love he craves when he spends time with Rosa and her mum Val, who is the cleaner for the town's mobile library. Bobby's home life becomes intolerable. When Val loses her job they all decide to abscond in the mobile library. On the road they are joined by Joe, a mysterious, yet kindhearted ex-soldier. They travel around England with the police hot on their tail. The crux of the novel is the great characters, especially Bobby. The Mobile Library takes you on an adventurous literary journey, as Bobby devours the books on the library shelves. If you liked The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, then you certainly will enjoy this tender, funny and provocative adventure.
