Sheila Hancock is a British actress and film director.  Sheila is the widow of the actor John Thaw and has written two best selling memoirs The Two of Us and Just MeMiss Carter's War is her debut novel and is based on true historical events.  Marguerite Carter is a former French resistance heroine whose French mother and English father have died.  She decides to return to England to get a degree and become a teacher.  Sheila Hancock is a masterful storyteller and Marguerite is one of the most powerful female characters I have read this year.  She is a caring teacher who is interested in supporting her pupils in school and in their family life as well.  Marguerite is also a social activist who is not afraid to stand up and march for what she believes is important.  The novel spans life from  post war London  to the beginning of the new century.  It is always satisfying when you read an engrossing novel and learn about history of the time.
