A young couple travel to Scotland in search of two valuable motorcycles, buried long ago by the woman’s grandfather. They succeed, but in the process they also discover the body of a man, murdered and buried with the bikes. DCI Karen Pirie is called in to investigate the cold case which eventually leads back to WWII and looted diamonds. This is a fine addition to the Karen Pirie series of novels, with both city and rural Scotland featuring as characters almost as much as the actual characters. The highlight of course is the feisty Pirie and the way she engages with people: suspects; interfering bosses; friends and colleagues. Mind you, the mystery of the body in the bog is pretty good too!
