With more than 650 color images, basic and traditional upholstery techniques are presented in step-by-step detail. Traditional upholstery is a craft that has evolved over centuries for padding and covering chairs, seats, and sofas. Using a solid wood or webbed platform, it can involve the use of springs, lashings, stuffings of animal hair, grasses and coir, wools, hessians, and scrims, as well as bridle or stuffing ties, blind stitching, top stitching, flocks, and wadding.

Projects include various styles of chairs, from a classic dining room table chair to a contemporary armchair, antique sofa, and a bed headboard. A detailed worksheet of the general process takes you through design elements to be considered prior to embarking on your project, introduces types of stitching, and helps you trouble-shoot problems. A gallery of completed projects will inspire your own creative ideas. AUTHOR: Santiago Pons Ferrer is an upholsterer with over 50 years of experience. He was trained in Barcelona's most prestigious workshops and later founded the current Taller de Tapiceria Artesanal Pons in the same city. He holds the title of Maestro Artesano de la Generalitat de Catalunya since 2007, recognising his professional and teaching career, his mastery and excellence with respect to the craft of upholstery. Jordi Pons Cort is the son of Santiago and continues the upholstery workshop where he was trained. He has worked there for 30 years and today he heads the workshop. He combines traditional craft techniques with new and innovative methods, constantly searching for high-quality materials to perform both kinds of work. Merce Garcinuno is a specialist for wickerwork as it is applied to furniture and has more than 10 years of professional experience. She regularly collaborates with the Pons upholstery workshop, both for restoring antique furniture and the creation of contemporary pieces. Eva Pascual i Miro is a licensed art historian from the University of Barcelona and specializes in museography and design (Universidad Politecnica de Catalunya) and preventive conservation (Universidad Autonoma de Catalunya). As part of her family tradition, she studied antiques, particularly Catalonian furniture and medieval furniture. 661 colour images
