An extraordinary new novel from the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize winning The Remains of the Day'You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay 'The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years.Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.
Mike has been the Boffins storeman forever, it seems. Mike is also a writer of fiction and poetry. His 2 novels Old Jazz and The Music of Dunes were published by Fremantle Press, and are still available on request at Boffins. He has also published short fiction and poetry in various Australian literary journals. His reading tastes are wide, but mostly fiction and biography.
For those familiar with Ishiguro’s previous novels, his latest work is unlike anything else he has ever published. The Buried Giant is set in ancient Britain inhabited by Britons and Saxons (the Romans have long left and the legendary Arthur has passed) and concerns a journey of an aging couple across a mostly hostile landscape. For a reader not usually drawn to the fantasy genre, I found this to be a remarkable work that plays with fantasy and history in a style that is truly compelling; a novel best started with a completely open mind, a ‘road book’, if you like, that takes you with it across a land shrouded in a mist of forgetfulness. Moving and strangely believable, Giant is a haunting tale that will sit with you for days after the final sentence. To those who have yet to discover Ishiguro’s previous novels, I would urge them to also explore Never Let Me Go and Remains of the Day, two more gems from this remarkable author.
