Mike has been the Boffins storeman forever, it seems. Mike is also a writer of fiction and poetry. His 2 novels Old Jazz and The Music of Dunes were published by Fremantle Press, and are still available on request at Boffins. He has also published short fiction and poetry in various Australian literary journals. His reading tastes are wide, but mostly fiction and biography.
O’Hagan is an accomplished writer and with his latest novel, The Illuminations, he skilfully demonstrates his craft; A tale of contemporary warfare, the impact it has on the men on the ground combines with the muddied emotions of family history. Luke is back from military service in Afghanistan and feels compelled to strengthen his relationship with his ailing grandmother, Anne, a once famous photographer, now suffering from Alzheimer’s and living in a care facility. Together, they retrace segments of broken lives on a trip to Blackpool to see the annual illuminations. Beautifully written and an emotional journey well worth the taking. The Afghanistan segments are very powerful, and the inner life of Anne with her failing memory is totally believable. An early 2015 release that could well be a contender for a Booker listing.
